Will I need a fishing license?
Yes: The D.N.R. requires anyone 17 or older to have on their person a valid all species fishing license when fishing for Salmon or Trout. One day licenses are available and can be purchased on-line by clicking on this link.
How big is your boat?
You will enjoy your day on a 28' Bayliner Trophy sport fishing boat. This boat is has a 9'x 10' obstacle free fishing area, which 5 people can fish from comfortably with a hard top cabin.
What type of equipment does your boat have?
All U.S.C.G required safety equipment plus Radar, Sonar [fish finder], Marine Radio, 4 Walker downriggers, GPS, Auto Pilot, Planer Boards, fresh water wash down,
Does your boat have a bathroom?
Yes: Stand-up head enclosed for your privacy.
What equipment do I need to bring?
None: We furnish all the gear, rods, reels lures etc.
Should I bring anything to eat or drink?
Yes: Most people get hungry and thirsty on either a 6 or 9 hour trip. You are welcome to bring whatever you want to eat or drink [no glass containers please]. Alcoholic beverages are allowed but if anyone in your party becomes overly intoxicated the charter can and will be cut short with the full rate being charged. Your safety is my responsibility. Let's just have fun!
What if we don't get any hits by fish?
Manistee is one of the most consistent fisheries in the state so this probably won't happen. In the event that it does we would reschedule for another date at my expense!
What about weather or big waves?
This is where we really stand out from most other charters. In the event that the weather or waves will not permit a safe and enjoyable trip we can postpone our departure time by 1, 2, or 3 hours which many times the weather will turn to more favorable conditions. We can do this because we only schedule one trip per day when other charters many times will have another trip scheduled for the afternoon and have to reschedule you and your party for another day. Many times customers travel great distances for their fishing adventure so we have the ability to be very accommodating. The Boat and the Captain can handle rough water, but your enjoyment is the most important factor. Your input on the weather and waves will weigh heavily on the decision to fish. Once the decision to fish has been made and we have to turn back due to seasickness the minimum [generally the deposit] will be charged for the trip providing the Lake conditions have not changed for the worse.
What can I do about seasickness:
Many over the counter products are available at many gas stations and pharmacies such as Dramamine and Bonine. If you have tried these products before without success then your physician can prescribe some patches which people tell me work great. Many times the consumption of alcohol the night before and lack of a good nights rest are big contributors to seasickness.
What if we want to fish longer than planned?
If this is your first trip on a charter boat, the Captain suggests that you only schedule a 6 hour trip to start with. Your trip can easily be extended to a 9 hour trip if you are enjoying your day and the fishing limit has not been reached. This is one reason why we only schedule one trip per day.
Tips, should we and if so how much?
As with any other service industry, this is completely up to you. Many times the Captain must operate the boat by himself but when he has a mate, generally, the mate will be working for nominal pay and any tips make up the bulk of his wages. If you feel he has done a good job for you, it would be nice if you let him know. But again, this is entirely up to you.
What about lodging?
I have set up a lodging page and by clicking on Manistee/Lodging, the Captain's suggestions for lodgings are listed here. Although in-season lodging rates can be expensive, there is an economical campground within 1 mile of the marina for campers. For other economical overnight accommodations, call the Captain at 989-828-6370 or 989-240-0855.
How do I find your boat?
I have included a map to the boat on my Manistee/Lodging page.
